It’s high time that certain songs should not heard ever again. These are are not the bad songs that haunt the radio airwaves like Europe’s „Final Countdown”, all of Roxette’s stuff as well Bryan Adam’s. I’m talking about the beloved classics, timeless, perfect …. and overplayed. People need new classics to listen to. So for today’s Streffa Jeffa I jokingly, with no great intention to insult, present a list of „great” songs that I never have to listen to again…and neither should you.
First on the list is the song that first gave me this idea. „Imagine” John Lennon. I’m not including his other solo material or the Beatles’ catalogue, just that one song. It’s the one that everybody sings along to. In addition, the lyrics are so boring; unfortunately it’s hard to find good songs about „peace”. A perfect example is Scorpions’ „Winds of Change” – a song that evedrybody loved 20 years ago but I hope are realizing that it sucks. So great song, but never again.
Next on the list, Simon and Garfunkel’s „Sound of Silence”. I could mention their other songs but this one is good enough. It’s a big sing-along, slow, sappy and over-played/overpraised. People have their record just for this song. So it’s time to forget this song, so that people will give other Simon and Garfunkel songs a chance.
Another song I never want to listen to again is Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, which in fact my band BINGE plays in concert. „Knockin’..” is listed here not because it’s a bad song but because so many singers and bands (much worse and more lame than mine) insist on playing in the same boring way. Even though I still enjoy Bob Dylan’s original and begrudgingly Guns n’ Roses’ cover version, just so that other performers will stop playing it in the same plodding lazy way, „Knockin’ …” could be erased from my memory. I make this comment only half-seriously as BINGE’s version of „Knockin’” is great and people should start thinking this is our song and not Bob’s. This is the case with „Hey Joe” and Jimi Hendrix and „House of the Rising Sun” and The Animals. So if you’re a shitty band and would like to play „Knockin’…”, don’t do it the same shitty way but another shitty way. Take BINGE for example.
Fianlly, on today’s list of great songs that should never be played again I present most of the stuff by Elvis. Elvis as an academic topic should still be discussed but not played. Elvis is up there with Beethoven or Bach. Nobody listens to him because they like his music but because it’s Elvis. Just like most people don’t read Mickiewicz for enjoyment. They, usually students and pupils, have to. He was an important part in the development of modern music/rock-n-roll/western entertainment but I don’t want to listen to him.
All the experts/snobs (often on Trójka) continusously tell us what we should listen to and that could change. There is a whole lot of music out there besides Elvis, Simon & Garfunkel, Micheal Jackson, Tina Turner, etc. However please don’t start listening to disco-polo or I will have to kill you all.
